Some common fixture and ceiling compatibility concerns are:

The difference between a grid fixture and a flanged fixture is very important when choosing the correct Kurtzon product to use in your application. There is some confusion here that may cause a mistake to occur, so it is important to understand the different ceiling constructions and hence the different fixtures that must be ordered to match the ceiling.

  • A recessed ceiling fixture is a general-purpose term for fixtures that are installed so that most of the fixture enclosure is above the ceiling line. However, a grid fixture is very different from a flanged fixture, although the term "recessed ceiling fixture" is used in connection with both styles. SO PLEASE NOTE THAT THE TERM "RECESSED CEILING" IS AMBIGUOUS, AND MUST BE CLARIFIED FURTHER TO INSURE PROPER FIXTURE SELECTION.
  • A grid ceiling is basically a pre-fabricated metal mesh construction into which products such a ceiling tiles, lighting fixtures, etc, can be simply laid in, IF THEY ARE THE CORRECT DIMENSION AND CONSTRUCTION.
  • A T-bar ceiling is a different term for the same construction ceiling as above. Kurtzon manufactures specific fixtures for each size of grid, with one exception. The Klean Lock Series is standard for one inch and one and a half inch T-Bar. Two-inch T-bar grid fixtures are available as an optional construction. See the catalog sheets under "options".
  • A totally different type of ceiling construction than the ceilings discussed above is often called a plaster, gypsum board, drywall, or sheetrock ceiling. This ceiling involves on-site fabrication of common construction materials to complete the job. A final step in prepping this type of ceiling for fixture installation is to cut and frame a hole in the ceiling surface. This hole must be properly sized for the fixture. A "flanged fixture" is meant to be used in this kind of ceiling, and CANNOT be used with a grid or T-bar ceiling. Plaster ceiling installers may also prefer the optional plaster frame. This frame provides a pre-made properly sized rigid metal frame that is secured to the building structure where a fixture is installed before the plaster is applied. The frame allows for a reinforced clean finished edge that is flat and properly sized for the fixture. Plaster frames are not used with gypsum board, drywall, or sheetrock ceilings.

( Toggle arm mounting, is our standard style of mounting a fixture into this kind of ceiling. Yoke Hanger mounting on the other hand, for a Kurtzon lighting fixture application is the optional and most secure method of mounting fixtures. Yoke mounting is ordered as an option. See the options section on the Kurtzon catalog sheet. Also see the Installation Sheet for Yoke or Toggle Arm for further details.)

Do other manufacturers products match the features of Kurtzon’s products?

A feature-by-feature comparison of Kurtzon’s products with another manufacturers products is called a "cross-over". Our Customer Service department is happy to do a crossover for our agents and specifiers. We need the all the following information in order to do a crossover:

1) A complete lighting specification by manufacturer, catalog number, and/or catalog sheets with catalog numbers. A drawing or other information, such as lamps/ballast data, may also be needed.

2) A crossover for Quotation purposes may require additional information, such as product quantities by type. Consult the Quotations department.

How can I care for the finish of my Kurtzon fixture:

Care for the finish of your fixture by:

Satin-polished type 304 stainless steel

We recommend applying fine oil and reapplying every 6 months. (This step is only recommended for the most severe environments where appearance is important.) While our stainless steel does not corrode on the sub-surface, the surface can be disfigured by gathering corrosion by-products, particularly in a pool environment.

Powder coated finishes:

No maintenance necessary.

Diffuser surface:

Wiping it clean periodically. Household grade glass cleaner may be used if desired.

Anodized Reflector Surface:

No maintenance necessary.
